Event

Join us tonight for our first Open House and Fundraiser - with treats.

Tonight we are gathering to celebrate the ways we, together, are making the world a more beautiful place, and talk about how we can do more of that.

Discover The Art of Deep Freeze Festival

Discover The Art of Deep Freeze Festival

Deep Freeze turns 10 this year. It’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago Iwas secretly thinking Arts On The Ave was crazy for creating a winter festival, building on the success of the big Kaleido fall festival. I was not a fan of winter (I’m still not) and thought no one would want to attend something outdoors this time of year, never mind show up to help put the thing on. I’ve been wrong so many times.

Deep Freeze has won me over with many magic moments. Holding hands with my family as we watched the first Deep Freeze fireworks certainly stands out. I got to try old-timey curling for the first time, and cabane-a-sucre, the insta-freeze maple syrup sucker created on a bed of snow. I’ve slid the ice slide and push my kids in a ski-studded deep freezer.  There’s been a lot of skating, too.

With such a wealth of activities, don’t miss the great art on display at Deep Freeze.

Here are some of the most arty bits you’ll want to watch for as you wander the grounds.

HELD OVER! A NEW BEGINNING Now closes Oct 22 for a very good reason

HELD OVER! A NEW BEGINNING Now closes Oct 22 for a very good reason

We've been promoting October 15 since Kaleido Festival and I know people are looking forward to that date. So why move the event? The simple answer is because we want to support Brandon Atkinson.

Brandon has landed a major public art commission out of the province and had to fly out for meetings this week. It was a last minute arrangement and the timing couldn't be changed. This is a landmark event in Brandon's career and it means he can no longer be with us for his closing or give an artist talk this Saturday.

I hope you can join us on the new date, October 22, to meet Brandon Atkinson and share some snacks and conversations. It will be worth the wait.

The Return of ArtLuck

The Return of ArtLuck

Remember show and tell? This is like that. But with food. And art. And grown-ups.

Bring a piece of art you'd like to share. It can be your art or someone else's. It can be visual art, writing, music, dance or a slice of theatre. We can watch you live or use our projector. We'll make it work so you can share what you want to share.

Workshop Recap: Altered Books with Penny Torres

Workshop Recap: Altered Books with Penny Torres

I've never altered a book before.

Sure, I've highlighted and underlined and jammed a thousand sticky notes into the pages to mine the goodness from a book for posterity. But I have never transformed a book into a work of art.

Tonight, Penny Torres is going to teach me how to alter a book.

Ni wapataenan - A New Video for We see

Ni wapataenan.

We see.

We see missing and murdered indigenous women in this country.

We see a field of bare trees hung with red dresses. We see colourful prayer flags covering those trees throughout February and into March.

We see change. We see healing and we see hope. We will continue to see. And we will act for reconciliation.

Opens February 7 at 2 PM. Closes March 5 at 3 PM.
92st and 118th ave

All are welcome.

Found Wanting: An Installation by Betty Spackman

I first heard about Found Wanting over a year ago. I've been wanting to visit the exhibit ever since.

Thanks to a connection with Kings University, I get to see the exhibit tomorrow night. You, of course, can join me to experience this unique and painstaking exploration of 'Grief and Gratitude'. This massive undertaking from Betty Spackman also addresses our relationships to the animals we consume and share our planet with.
