I’m Dave Von Bieker, a singer-songwriter who has learned the immeasurable value of connecting my creativity to my spirituality. I’m looking forward to focussing on both this June in the mountains, and I’d like to invite you to join me.
Art: Vocabulary for the Soul is a retreat run by husband and wife creatives Julie Drew and Sam Drew at King’s Fold Retreat and Renewal Centre. Julie Drew is a painter. She leads paper-making workshops during Kaleido Festival, writes songs and I’m sure that’s not the half of it. Sam Drew is a Spiritual Director and former pastor who also writes. Both Julie and Sam are passionate about the ‘thin places’ where art and faith meet. So am I.
This will be my first retreat with Julie and Sam Drew, so it will be a new experience for all of us. We will all find ourselves in that fertile headspace known as ‘beginners mind’. Open to new experiences. Perhaps ready to hope for transformation.
This experiential retreat is not heavily skills-based, though instruction and help is available. Specific sessions are available for watercolour painting and drawing, songwriting and writing, for those who desire them. Guests are also free to create in any medium, as each creative endeavour feeds the others in community. You will want to take time to simply enjoy the beautiful setting of King’s Fold.
The focus of the weekend is on exploration and conneciton.
The ways art-making causes us to pause. To be still. To pay attention. To trust we will discover God’s Spirit waiting to meet with us.

We will explore the ways that art making offers a unique gateway to communion with God. Our goals are simple. We want to grow in our faith, grow in our art and form deeper community with others on this journey.
There will be solitude and group time in the schedule. King’s Fold is a beautiful location in the foothills along Ghost River.
This retreat will be a breath of fresh air for artists, would be artists, and for those who are curious about art and faith.

Earlybird registration (by Midnight January 1) is just $350. This covers accommodation in a beautiful location, 3 meals on Saturday and 2 on Sunday, and the program.
