Karla Adolphe is a firecracker. To witness her ancient, booming voice rising from a young and unassuming woman feels like a miracle. One bellow and Karla Adolphe commands a room–especially an intimate room like Red Deer’s The Space. Karla thrives when connections can be made with her listeners. Her heart beats for creative people and when she performs that heart nearly bursts. With all of this electricity, it’s hard to believe Karla Adolphe has never released a live recording. Until now

This new video, in just under two minutes, will take you through the work and wonders of OPEN WALLS. Of course, it's not quite like seeing the real thing. You have until this Saturday, November 14, to do that.

Today I want to shine the spotlight on you. Or us. Since we began this journey called Website Wednesdays, many of you have jumped in and launched your own artist website. Many of you have been using Squarespace to do this. Like me. I want to show our sites off

Isabelle Gallant and her team have done a wonderful job finding our most beautiful threads, and they have shared their work online. Like the best coverage, this story makes me feel as good as I ever have about what we're up to with this show. About our role in this city. About the part I get to play in all of this.
Thank you, Isabelle, for not only hearing but listening. It shows.

Here, in the gathering dark, can I share some sparks of hope? Can we build a fire to warm ourselves with wise words as our kindling?
Here are eleven little lights for this eleventh month. Eleven quotes from eleven creative voices. May each bring you hope this morning.

I show up early for a private viewing of LESS IS MORE, Keith Walker’s new show at the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery. My first discovery is that this gallery is upstairs, not downstairs where I thought. There, in the feature gallery, is another show well worth viewing, MASTERWORKS.
My second discovery is that the name LESS IS MORE is misleading. LESS doesn’t factor into this work in any way at first blush. There is plenty going on here, and it’s going to take me a while to digest it all.

It’s Thursday, October 22. The final evening for pre-submission to OPEN WALLS, our community art exhibit.
I’ll be the second volunteer on shift today. I make it on time (for those who know me well, this is impressive), but barely. I should be early. I have the keys.
I arrive to find Lisa waiting for me. She’s not alone. A line up of four artists–canvas in hand–has formed behind her. These people are excited to share their work.
I really should have gotten here early.

This is the experiment. From late October to mid November, we’re not planning anything. Except a radical openness. We’re leaving our walls bare and we are trusting you to cover them with your beautiful work.

We started this Space for the community, not just for ourselves. Today, we are opening our Call for Submissions for the 2016 and 2017 gallery season. If you wonder if your work would be a fit for our space, have a read through our Manifesto and get a sense of what we're all about.
Still with me? Great! We'd love to hear your ideas for the Space. Heck, you can even use our fancy dancy online form!

"Art that hates you."
If this is not said, it’s felt in response to much Contemporary Art. And if not by you then by me. The slogan is funny because it rings true. The slogan is not mine. It was conceived in Robert Clark’s essay, Downriver. This beautiful reflection on Clark’s visit to Tate Modern can be read on the Image Journal webiste. That’s where I found it today, after Googling ‘art that hates you”.
I’d first heard the phrase at a Glen Workshop keynote from Greg Wolfe. He tossed it out as a somewhat provocative joke to the room full of artists. Not exactly preaching to the choir. But we laughed. We get the sad sense it makes.
Two weekends ago contemporary art gave our city plenty and we ate it up. Our first Nuit Blanche put a smile on my face and perhaps there is no better way to tell you why than to say that this art didn’t hate me.
