Website Wednesday Cuts Your Images Down to Size

Website Wednesday Cuts Your Images Down to Size

If you want your website to load quickly for your visitors (and believe me, you do), it’s important that the images you use are sized correctly for the web. If you take a photo of your latest sculpture in stunning hi-definition and then throw that directly onto your site, your visitors are going to watch that photo load on their screens bit by bit. Bar by bar. Like it’s 1996. More likely, they’ll just leave.

Image size is increasingly important as more and more users are viewing your website on their smartphone. The bigger your images, the more of your visitors’ precious data you are demanding.

Website Wednesday Builds a Home(page)

The homepage on your website will give visitors your Most Important Thing. That will be the first thing they see. Exactly what you hope will be the first thing they see. We’ll make it so, by design.

So with that Most Important Thing firmly in mind, let’s get our hands dirty, back in our website building tool of choice, Squarespace.

Website Wednesday and The Template of Doom

Website Wednesday and The Template of Doom

Welcome to the fifth installment of Website Wednesdays. Today we are walking our website straight into the Template of Doom.

Choosing your website Template is our next step, and one of the first steps to really getting started. As a first step, it can be pretty daunting. But it doesn’t need to be.

Website Wednesday: Let's Go Online!

Website Wednesday: Let's Go Online!

For a month now we’ve been talking about building a better website for your art. If you’ve been following along, you now know why you want that website. You know exactly what it is for and how it will be used. You know the Most Important Thing people will do when they get there. And you know most of the other things(5 to 7 other things) they’ll do, too.

Well congratulations, hero. You’ve made it to the moment you’ve been waiting for. The moment when we actually start building your brand-spankin’-new art website. The moment you start to see results take shape. You are ready to go online.

Website Wednesday: Draw Me a Map

Website Wednesday: Draw Me a Map

You may want people to sign up for a weekly newsletter where you email out sketches. Art sales may be your goal, and so your homepage will feature the latest painting for sale with a big ‘buy now’ button.

But that’s just the home page. Your website doesn’t have to have more than one page, but it likely will. There will likely be more than one thing you’ll want to offer. Contact information. Your CV. A gallery. All things that may be important to your visitors, but not so important that they fill up that sacred front page.

Today we’ll map out the rest of your site.

Website Wednesday: Start With Why

"I’d like to see more of your work. What’s your website?"

What goes through your head when you hear those words? Pride and excitement? Fear and shame?

I want you to have a website you are proud of. One you like and you can maintain. Starting today, this series will help you get there.

In the weeks to come, we’ll be rebuilding KarlaAdolphe.ca. I invite you to come along for the ride. Read these posts, but follow along, too. Take this opportunity to give your own website an overhaul. We’ll be working with specific tools, but also with general principles that will apply regardless of the tools you choose.
