"Art that hates you."
If this is not said, it’s felt in response to much Contemporary Art. And if not by you then by me. The slogan is funny because it rings true. The slogan is not mine. It was conceived in Robert Clark’s essay, Downriver. This beautiful reflection on Clark’s visit to Tate Modern can be read on the Image Journal webiste. That’s where I found it today, after Googling ‘art that hates you”.
I’d first heard the phrase at a Glen Workshop keynote from Greg Wolfe. He tossed it out as a somewhat provocative joke to the room full of artists. Not exactly preaching to the choir. But we laughed. We get the sad sense it makes.
Two weekends ago contemporary art gave our city plenty and we ate it up. Our first Nuit Blanche put a smile on my face and perhaps there is no better way to tell you why than to say that this art didn’t hate me.

They say that God is in the details, but I’m not so sure. I’m beginning to notice a whole lot of details that seem left entirely up to you and I. The amount of influence we have in this world–for good or evil–is a sobering thought.

Not an aphorism I typically use for God. But it’s been floating around my mind for a week or two. The feather has fallen, perhaps, from the wings of friends I’ve watched fly out the open windows of churches over the years.
Sitting with a new friend over coffee, the image takes shape. He tells me how he’s tried to leave his faith behind, but has remained within its ever-expanding walls. The problem is Jesus, he tells me.
He just cannot get over Jesus. Jesus sticks. Like a feather, I think.

The last week in September, who knew we’d be absolutely smothered in great arts options here in YEG? So, many it’s going to be hard to pick. I suppose we should have seen this coming, what with it being Alberta Culture Days and all.
Honestly, I won’t even get to the Edmonton Short Film Festival. I cannot squeeze in the Accordian Extravaganza either. Yeesh.
So choose one event, or become a #YEGarts superstar and try them all. Just get out there before the month is over, in these fresh first days of fall and take in some art, faith, hope and love!

I first heard about Found Wanting over a year ago. I've been wanting to visit the exhibit ever since.
Thanks to a connection with Kings University, I get to see the exhibit tomorrow night. You, of course, can join me to experience this unique and painstaking exploration of 'Grief and Gratitude'. This massive undertaking from Betty Spackman also addresses our relationships to the animals we consume and share our planet with.

It’s Friday. The sun is back. The weekend waits. Here are five directions you'll want to head if you’re looking for art, faith, hope and love this weekend.
Of course, this is all in addition to visiting me at the Bleeding Heart Art Space between 11 AM and 3 PM on Saturday. Am I right?

Do you see bright and beautiful people or the ugliness of the world smudged across faces? Do you see a marching mob or a happy parade?
Incline your ear. Do you hear gunshots or fireworks?
This past week has been one of contrast for Alberta Avenue. For a community in transition. A community trying desperately to emerge from its chrysalis. This weekend at Kaleido Festival we saw the butterfly. Last week, we saw blood on the streets.
Five shootings last week. All nearby. All reminders that there is still a darkness here. That people still do ugly things to one another. That it gets so dark you want to hide. To build what walls you can manage and light a candle for you and yours.
But love was never easy and love was never safe.

From a vast seashore of memory, let me pluck this one moment. Let me pick it up and hold it in the sunshine. Let the golden light reveal its many coloured faces. Let me hold it to your ear so you can listen for the ocean.
This is what I hear.
