I hope you have a meaningful Easter. I hope you experience the richness of the Story - the movement from darkness and death towards light and life.
Smack in the middle of all this comes Holy Saturday. I wrote a poem on Holy Saturday a few years back - here is a newly revised version.
HOLY SATURDAY
And this holy Saturday is
An elastic band, stretched taut
A kingdom held back
just one more day
kinetic
energetic
propulsion potential
The hand
calms the waves
The voice
stills the voices
Not yet,
not yet
But soon
and then ... oh, then!
You will let fly the smile of love
Zip!
To the back of the head
Snap!
But not yet
The band may yet break
The dark is still pregnant
A belly stretched taut
Soon.

Macro images take a close-up look at our world. They train our eyes to pay attention. They show us 'the world in a grain of sand', as William Blake put it.

Last month I put a challenge out to myself and anyone who’d like to join along (it’s never too late!). I want to support local artists in a tangible way by spending more money on their work in 2017. Not huge pile of cash, but a deliberate, reachable amount of personal patronage.
My goal is to spend 20$ on local arts experiences and $17 on an arts products, every month this year.
20 and 17 in 2017. $37 every month for a total of $444 over the course of the year. If you do this, too, we can make a big difference in the local art scene.
Instead of going to a $15 movie, go to a $15 concert.
Instead of buying a $20 poster from IKEA, pick up a print from a local gallery like SNAP or VividPrint or even right here at Bleeding Heart Art Space.
So, how am I doing? I’m getting there.

As we prepare, fun fur is everywhere right now. Creatures crafted by local artist Hilary Mussell are shedding. Wild Folk opens this Saturday at 11 AM and it's like nothing we've shown before

Hopeful stories of healing and reconciliation are being written, right now.
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people are seeing one another, often, as if for the first time, for our strengths and our shared struggles. People are living out answers to questions that seemed impossible–impassible–a decade ago.
I want to hear more reconciliation stories. I think they will bring healing. Momentum. Change.
Maskihkîy Âcimowin / Medicine Stories will provide a context for reconciliation stories to be shared, around a great tree in the centre of a public space, over four weeks this spring.

Deep Freeze turns 10 this year. It’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago Iwas secretly thinking Arts On The Ave was crazy for creating a winter festival, building on the success of the big Kaleido fall festival. I was not a fan of winter (I’m still not) and thought no one would want to attend something outdoors this time of year, never mind show up to help put the thing on. I’ve been wrong so many times.
Deep Freeze has won me over with many magic moments. Holding hands with my family as we watched the first Deep Freeze fireworks certainly stands out. I got to try old-timey curling for the first time, and cabane-a-sucre, the insta-freeze maple syrup sucker created on a bed of snow. I’ve slid the ice slide and push my kids in a ski-studded deep freezer. There’s been a lot of skating, too.
With such a wealth of activities, don’t miss the great art on display at Deep Freeze.
